Points of Interest Friday Jun 12 2009

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Ahh, time for some points of interest from my site if you are inclined.  Some of these links have been very popular, others – not so much.  I hope there is some information there that you can use or find amusing.

There were some issues about what information is important in saving money.  Here are some links that help you out with that sort of thing.  Definitely something you should sleep on to think about.

I have been getting more questions related to making money through dice and I would refer to a fine site such as Steen’s WinCraps, one of these, and of course, my own little tome on the subject.  You can order Practical Craps from Amazon, Barnes and Noble or anywhere that fine books are sold.  It has been a very popular book of mine.  Don’t expect any nonsense in it or false promises – remember that Craps is a negative expectation game and you should treat it as such.

And of course, moments such as these, with my daughter, Arianna, which can floor a parent in seconds.  Remember that you can do a search on my blog for other items of note and interest.  Unfortuntately, some of the search results might be larger than others so please try and get as specific as you can.

Hope everybody is having a great Friday and have a safe, happy, healthy and profitable weekend.

Practice Teaching Peace At Home and Work

Friday, June 12th, 2009

With more and more people out of work and money tough, people look to blame something for their predicament.  Often times it is people outside of their race, creed or color.  Take some time and educate yourself and your co-workers, family and anybody who will listen that you are a person, you are entitled to a good life and you are not a victim.  You have the skillsets or can get them to change things in your life on your own without blaming other people or trying to hurt others because things make not have been going your way financially or socially.

Parents should be teaching tolerance at home and it is very important that people from other countries who come to America to respect our customs as much as they wish for us to respect theirs.  If communities are closing their doors and becoming exclusive for business and personal living they are setting themselves up for being knocked down and getting the wrong impression (and giving the wrong impression) of what others and they are about.

The take away is please practice communication and teach your kids to be tolerant.

In the long run it is a great decision and we can stop the circles of hate from growing and being passed on from generation to generation.

At the very least, in order to keep tempers in check, take five minutes to practice smiling and being nice to people, even if you don’t want to.  There are a lot of people out of work and if you think that you are above being laid off, think again.

Remember that somebody has to start breaking the chain otherwise it will continue and feed to others and the universe has a way of balancing things out one way or another.  You don’t like being treated poorly so please try to treat others as you yourself want to be treated.

Don’t Hide Money In Your Mattress

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

In almost a cliche like situation, a woman threw out her mother’s mattress and it had $1000000 in it.  A Israeli woman who is only going by the name, Anat, (a good idea since she would be hounded by golddiggers or in this case mattressdiggers)  threw out a mattress with $1 million inside, setting off a massive series of searchs through  garbage at a number of landfill sites.  The woman told Army Radio that she bought her elderly mother a new mattress as a surprise on Monday and threw out the old one, only to discover that her mother had hidden her life savings inside. When she went to look for the mattress it had already been taken by garbage men, she said. Subsequent searches at three different landfill sites turned up nothing.

At one dump they have increased security and Anat is taking this in stride as best as one can finding out that they literally have trashed one million bucks.

Folks, not sure how things and thieves work in Israel but one of the first things I would do if I were breaking and entry (and I have been told this by police and ex-burglars) is to go straight to the bedroom and look on or around or in the bed.  The reason is that people hide their cash, life savings or in some cases weapons in the bedroom for easy access if there is a fire or an emergency.  Thieves know this and they go there first and can be in and out in seconds or minutes.

To be fair, her mom was probably old world and didn’t trust banks and the way that banks have been screwing around with investments and loans, I don’t blame her.  The sad reality is that she ended up causing herself more grief by hiding the money.

I wonder if that money was legal and if it was taxed already.  If not she may have some answers for the government as to how the heck did you get a million bucks and what is it doing in your mattress or the dump?

If anybody finds the million dollars let us know please.  But make sure you wash your hands to get all the shmootz off after you find it in the dump.

There has to be a movie or book in this story somewhere…

Question to readers on June 10 2009

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Hi Gang!

I need your advice.  What kind of book or e-book do you want me to publish next?  Some of the ideas and choices I am playing with are:

1.  Special Needs

2.  Another Poker Book

3.  Saving Money

If you have any other suggestions that happen to hit my fields of expertise please let me know.  I am not of the mind to publish things that:

1.  Aren’t read.

2.  Boring.

3.  Will lose money.

It is a tough economic environment and I want to publish something that will be useful – so for the immediate future fiction is out ha ha- and that I can still make a little money on (with the operative word in the sentence being “little”).

Keep saving money and stay healthy.  Hello to all my readers around the world – stay safe and sane.

Calabasas High To Get Digital School Books

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

The Governor came down to talk to the people at Calabasas High and help celebrate the introduction of digital books which will be introduced to the school system.  I haven’t seen the digital textbooks and I don’t know what the details are about content but I presume that there will be books that can be replenished electronically and updated automatically wth ease.

As a writer and publisher I don’t look at this with alarm like some brick and mortar book publishers might because my investment is in myself and in content.  Content can be dispensed electronically and as more and more workable business models spring forth – and the current electronic school system approach hasn’t been proven to be viable one way or another yet because it hasn’t been implemented – I can move my content over to the appropriate medium.  One of the bigger problems facing everybody is that nobody is certain what the de facto medium is going to be for publishing in the future and that is something that may not get worked out or may have to be in sectors – maybe specific formats for certain industries (like one industry using .pdf files and another using .doc or .html or something that way).  I just hope that the digital devices that they are planning on using are tough.  The reason that books lasted as long as they did is because you can’t beat a thick binding to protect the content and as long as you didn’t get the book too wet to get mildewy you would be in good shape.

My e-book and Kindle sales haven’t been great and there is always the wall of  “Free” that is represented by the “e” in e-book publishing.  There is a lot to be said also by not having to lug around a lot of heavy books and the Governor made a point of showing how that you would be weightlifting with books.  Considering that is the only exercise that some kids get, maybe there should be some old books to use as carrying weights to keep the school kids working out as they go from class to class.  I was one of those geeks who carried all his books to every class most of the time.  It wasn’t out of a sense of torture, it was out of a sense of having to run to my locker which was three floors away and on the other side of the building.  There wasn’t enough time between classes and it was just easier to lug the books.  I was able to build up my arms and get stronger.  In retrospect I wouldn’t have minded having all my books in one simple, eas to use handheld device.  Times change, huh?

Hopefully with more chances of loading more books onto the digital books, kids will have access to more information on health, working out and exercise.  Of course, the things that the Board of Education needs to remember is that anything that is related to school becomes the Kiss of Death when it comes to kids wanting to have anything to do with it outside of school.  They want something that will be theirs.

I also want to remind people who adapt the early technologies for this that there will be problems with batteries at some point dying, electricity causing issues with the books and possibly system degradation on the storage media.  One would hope that you can redownload a fresh copy of the book if you had pages starting to go bad because of bad storage media.  There is also the issue of the books getting banged up and having to be replaced or getting a fresh memory chip or card.  I don’t know how that will work but some students are just plain hard on their books and I suspect with digital books it will be no different.  Instead of book covers made with paper bags (eco friendly) we will have digital books with protective plastic covers and cases so that if you drop them they won’t shatter.  I wonder if the screens will be in color or black and white.  Hmmm.

If anybody knows anything about getting to distribute on other book systems that are going digital or have thoughts on the matter, please post here on the blog.  Remember that I only take entries for up to ten days generally and after that I block posts.  I wonder if the kids books will have a place where they can share feedback similar to the products that the large companies like Google are trying to get out that remind me of the old bulletin board systems (BBS) back in the early dark ages of the Internet (1990s).  I guess that would be Middle Ages for the Internet and not the dark ages which would be the 1970s.

Be safe and healthy people and if you are working, keep your jobs!

Calabasas High To Get Digital School Books

Men, If you aren’t cooking already, you should learn how to

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Question from a reader:”What should I invest in to help me get girls as well as get rich?  There has to be a sexy career out there or something to put money into.  You are smart, Kim, what do you suggest?”

My suggestion is to put your energy into doing what you love to do, make sure you are well bathed, not smelly, and are reasonably articulate (or at least don’t say anything stupid or especially stupid to a lady) and learn how to cook a dinner.  Seriously.  Nothing in this current economic situation shows you have your act together like being able to get a recipe, get the ingredients, cook them and serve them for a lady for a date.  It is cheaper than going out to a dinner and a movie and if you are on the same wavelength with your date, you should get compliments and not things like, “Dang, you cheapskate.”

Being cheap and saving money is very hot and trendy now.  Even spoiled princesses are realizing that their princes may have another credit card payment or two to pay off and it may be hard if they had to sell off the castle.

From the explosion of television shows with chefs, cooks and the related culinary delights that are hitting cable, satellite and the rare primetime network station, it is tough to find anything wrong with cooking shows other than they are boring.  It gets harder and harder to make adding salt and pepper to a vegetable stew exciting.  There is where you can come in.

Since you will have an audience of one, you can invite your date over and cook for her and get to know her better, entertain her, etc.  It is easier to entertain an audience of one and not worry about ratings than being on television and if you plan your meal right, you don’t have to worry about anything violent (like her throwing your plates at your head like some celebrity prima donna chefs).

On an unrelated note (or maybe related if you want me to do a food analogy) – the stock market today was flat like a pancake and a souffle that had the wits scared out of it by a slamming door.  Doing your own due diligence people?  Good job.

Not sure what to make out of the numbers coming from Washington these days especially with the State health programs getting chopped to pieces.  There is talk that other programs can fill in the void by try saying that to people who are having a hard enough time trying to take care of themselves.  It isn’t going to happen.

Please do what you can to scream at your Governors, the State legislature and do whatever you can to insist that they can’t try to balance the budget that they have let go haywire on the backs of the poor, the disabled and the elderly.  We just can’t afford it.

Try and have a great day people and guys, learn how to cook.

Is there money in animation?

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Question from a reader:”Is there money in animation?”

My answer is there is always money in animation and the question you should be asking yourself is do you love cartoons, animation and/or comic books enough to do it as a living and not worry about whether you will be the next creator of Spongebob, Powerpuff Girls, Justice League, Chowder or Naruto.

People who get into comics or animation do it because they really love what they are doing and they love the genre.  It takes a lot of work and luck to make it to the top of the cartoon food chain and if you are doing it in hopes of getting easy licensing agreements, royalties etc you may need to adjust your business plan.

Do you have a knack for drawing?  Can you tell a story or a gag from a series of pictures?  Do you like to make people laugh or cry with your art?  If so, these are more along the lines of things that you should consider for becoming an animator.  All the animators I know have good times and bad times.  There is a huge interest in animation and because of the Internet and the chances of your video or art going viral, you have greater chances of being discovered and getting the fame.

From the fame, that might (note I said might) lead to money.  Studios and distribution arms of companies are not generous in paying for cartoon rights and you may (or may not) have to sell the farm on your first creations to get your feet into the door.  You can also start up your own website and host your own stuff there once you get going.

A great rule of thumb is see if people will want to look at your creative work for free and they keep coming back again and again.  Then you can think of charging for them.  At the very least you will build a portfolio that you can show potential producers or editors.

You should also learn the software tools that are out there for using color, generating cartoons and have a decent sense of what “looks good”.    Have your friends and relatives give you honest feedback.  Key word there was honest so if your Mom says, “Honey, everything you do is wonderful” you know that she doesn’t really mean it or if she does, she really loves you and ask her to clean your bathroom for you when you are too lazy or busy doing your cartoon doodles.

Be patient and get into an artist community and get back to me to let me know how you are doing.

So, there is money to be paid but you first need to have great ideas that are executed well and out there for people to see on television and the Internet for the money to be able to find a path to make it to you.

Have a great day everybody.

Equestrian Therapy Tribute

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

We just got back from an Equestrian Therapy Tribute to Jacques Fouchaux.  Jacques was in the French Cavalry and has been teaching special needs children how to ride and help heal themselves since 1961.  Sonny, Cindy, Megan and the dozens of people who I am forgetting to mention or spelling their names incorrectly put on a great event at the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas.  There was a decent turn out, great music and items auctioned off with the proceeds to benefit Equestrian Therapy.

Arianna has been going to Equestrian Therapy and it has helped her stay walking.  The health and psychological benefits of the therapy are fantastic and the children (and adults) who get involved as particpants or as volunteers blossom and enjoy a better quality of life.

There were awards for the volunteers and we had celebrities including Pauley Perrette (from NCIS), David Dean Bottrell (Boston Legal),  the Eagles tribute band The Long Run and the usual local bunch of Equestrian Therapy fans.

Here are a couple videos from the event.  As I get more uploaded I will try and post more.

Enjoy.

IRS to change tax pro regulations

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Commissioner Doug Shulman testified the other day at the House Ways and Means session that the IRS is preparing a long overdue overhaul to make licensing for tax professionals.  That has been something I have been screaming about for years to everybody.  Mr.  Shulman sat down and then told a House Ways and Means subcommittee today he is preparing a “comprehensive set of recommendations” that may include new regulations for preparers to help recover an estimated $290 billion in uncollected taxes. He later told reporters that may include a registration or licensing requirement.   This isn’t a new idea and has been floating around for decades.  The fact that the U.S. government really needs money tells you that they are finally getting off their tails to make the shortfall up by weeding out more crooked or at the very least incompetent tax pros.

Requiring paid tax preparers to register or become licensed would establish a national accreditation framework for the industry for the first time, with the goal of improving accuracy of tax filings and ending fraud that investigators say fleeces both taxpayers and the government.

“This is nothing less than a transformational shift,” Shulman said.   That has been the case for California for years where the State of California has required through CTEC to be registered and to have had to pass around 60 plus hours of a basic tax class – you know, the ones that places like Block offer to allow you to become a tax professional.

The deal is though that with the current economy, you aren’t going to find Block hiring to many new people.  It is bad business also to train your competition (something business people setting up shop up in some places overseas have learned the hard way).  If you are taking a Block class they make you sign up stating that you aren’t going to work elsewhere, disclose their software training, etc.

Tax professionals fall all over the map when it comes to ethics despite efforts to get pros to take courses to stay on top of their game and be morally intact – at least when it comes to tax filings.    That hasn’t always helped and it has been up to the Treasury to sometimes stop the fraud and they step up to take care of business.  Case in point:  the Treasury Department Inspector General for Tax Administration, a part of the Treasury  which investigates fraudulent tax preparers, has helped prosecute several cases in recent years.

On Jan. 12, 2009, a Los Angeles preparer, Abdul Wahid, pleaded guilty to 10 charges including mail fraud, theft of government property, and aggravated identity theft after depositing checks clients wrote to pay tax bills into his own account and filing false returns on their behalf. He was sentenced to 132 months in prison and three years supervised release and fined $1,000.

Take note of the quote that was issued next:  “There are no national standards that a tax-return preparer is required to satisfy before selling tax preparation services to the public,” the Treasury inspector general’s office reported last September. “Anyone, regardless of training, experience, skill or knowledge, is allowed to prepare federal income tax returns for a fee.”

That certainly shows on a lot of tax returns that I had to redo, amend or just look at in sheer shock and awe.  There is a lot of bad advice out there and I think the step up of the introduction of testing and licensing will help weed out a lot of the bad apples in the income tax preparation business.

I will miss amending a lot of bad tax returns but there are generally a lot of those and no shortfall of people sadly who don’t know what they are doing with their income taxes.  The fact that a lot of them are using the Internet or software just makes them prone to errors faster because they think they know what they are doing on complex returns and they find out after they get their audit letters that they weren’t even close.

There may regulations on do-it-yourself software and it all depends on how in-depth the IRS goes initially into the regulations.  Something is suppose to be in place by December 2009 and I don’t know myself this point anything other than the information that I am presenting and what you can find out yourself if you search on the web.

It has been my experience that even decent experienced tax professionals (myself included in this batch) make mistakes once in awhile from the sheer volume of information that we have to keep track of and the tax law changes.  It happens and we amend tax returns accordingly.  It is even worse for the poorly trained tax pros and they even cause more damage if they are crooks.  As usual, be careful of who helps you with your tax preparation and you get what you pay for when you depend on tax software from a box or the web.  I am sorry but the software just can’t help you for complex tax returns and honestly, don’t you want a professional’s opinion at that point?  Why take chances with something that might cost you more money and several weeks of lost sleep at night?

You can also take the time and check out one of my books, “Bad Tax Idea, Good Tax Idea” for some immediate suggestions to help your own situation if you have filed an extension and are wading through tons of spreadsheets and receipts.

I also can be consulted for a fee and if you are interested drop me a line and I can set something up with you for next year’s tax season or for specific questions that you might have.  We are moving along to the point of the extensions ending and if you haven’t gotten started or continued on getting your tax return completed, please get on it.  This is your June wake up call and time is marching on!

What is ROI revisited

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Question from a reader:”Give me some clear examples of ROI will you?”

Sure thing.  ROI, also known as “Return on Investment” is the acronym that businesses use to show that they are getting back money for what they are investing in.  I think I may have talked about this in some of my books and a column or two but it is worth revisiting.

When it comes to money, you want to ask yourself, “What am I getting back in return for putting up this money and investing in your company, product, etc?”

You may not articulate this question to yourself but you always are asking yourself at some level  “What is in it for me?”.  ROI calculations spell it out for you very clearly.

If you put $1000 into a certificate of deposit for example that returns the principal and 10% in one year (a princely sum with interest rates in the cellar these days) your ROI is $100.

Now more than ever, a business looks at everything, especially labor as to what they can get for their ROI.  That means that when you pitch yourself to a company, you need to take into account what is it that you can do for them and do it quickly.  That means that most resume formats are pretty much trash and employers who are swamped want you to get to the bottom line and answer “What can you do for me?” just as you ask “What is in it for me?”

As we muddle and claw out of this Depression, we need to be  aware of ROI in everything we do financially.  I know some people look to see what they are getting out of relationships in the same vein but sometimes you can’t put a price on love, except in a divorce settlement.

For more ROI info, check out my book on Practical Money Making.

Have a great weekend and I will post again later on tonight.
