Tick Tock on Tax Extension

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

For those of you who had tax extensions – your time is coming up. You will need to file and c0mplete your tax return. I am available if you need help so just post on my site if you are in the United States and preferably in S0uthern California.

The due date is Oct 15 2012. Doesn’t seem far away after waiting since April and for others they still aren’t ready. If you are in the category where it wasn’t apparently profitable for you to get your return ready – now is your chance. In fact, it is your last chance before you get penalties and interest if you owe and you didn’t pay your estimated taxes earlier. Aw, come on, I know there are a lot of you out there who are members of that club.

I am available to help you but you have to hurry up. It is getting late and my dance card, as they say, is filling up. I have regular clients who are coming out of the woodwork now and they are ready and willing to go.

I am hoping you will be too if you haven’t already completed your return.

Make sure that you have your supporting documents and we are too late in the season for me to attempt any kind of shoebox reconciliations – plus I will charge you more for that.

Have your categories broken out if you are sole proprietorships and doing Schedule Cs. It wouldn’t hurt if you brought me last year’s return as well if you are coming to see me for the first time. Bring in the last 3 years while you are at and I can see if I can get you more money and insure that the last guy (or gal) did what they were suppose to do. Please – we are past the dawdle time and the returns need to get filed.

I am done with my rant :).

Cistern

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Anybody have any good suggestions for a home made cistern? I heard that ceramic filters (and some with pumps) are pretty good to have. With the water tables low from the heat it may be m0ot but I want to just be informed.

The reason I am interested in cisterns is that with the weather we are having and with the shmootz that is in rain, it would be a good idea to figure out alternative ways for filtering water and generally getting a pulse on what the water tables are like. Living in Southern California it isn’t profitable to sit back and always wait for things to come out in your best interests. I guess you can say that about anywhere you live.

The gotcha is that we need the rain to hold the water that the cisterns catch and for the immediate future the weather is hot with increasing heat at least for the next few days. The weather will be cooling off but where I live it will be in terms of just a few degrees during the day and we still are running roughly 20 degrees over the norm. So major yuck here.

Good cisterns are watertight containers that can hold water without letting contaminants in. They should also be checked for bacteria and mold and like I stated, those aren’t issues for me yet since I don’t have one up and running. Yet. Would like to get one going soon.

The nights are nice with the temperature dropping 40-50 degrees so the early mornings are in the nice 60 -65 degree zone. With some marine layers that come in we do get some moisture though it isn’t always around long enough before things start to burn off.

Other parts of the Southland here are getting similar problems. Places like Culver City that depend on coastal breezes are baking with 80-85 degrees and no air conditioning in their houses and apts.

So far so Carmageddon Good

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

As I sit outside listening to amateur radio on the PAPA system I am happy to report that Carmagedd0n is a non event so far. That is good news. I am tired. I just came back from recertifying with First Responder Training and I have a l0ng day tomorrow.

The weather is expected to be h0t so it will be borderline uncomfortable. F0r those of us in the San Fernando Valley stay hydrated and well fed.

Cheers!

Carmaggedon Fire Fighters

Friday, September 28th, 2012

It sounds like there will be about 200 firefighters standing by to support Carmaggedon. Looking on television at the freeway closures and not a heck of a lot of pe0ple are getting ready to go on the 405 before it gets shut d0wn.

To all those who are working and even moreso to the volunteerz – please be safe out there and have fun.

Hopefully it will continue to be a non event and I can make it to my First Responder class tomorrow.

That is if I can get up…

China Easing

Friday, September 28th, 2012

The stage is set to see next week if China will do their equivalent of quantitative easing. I would expect a market pop up for that and then we are properly in Oct0ber which is n0torious for having a lot of nasty surprises.

Expect fluctuation and resoluti0n on the down side. If not now, within the next five months for sure.

The more things change, the more they stay the same (I see things shaking out like they did 4 years ago marketwise.).

Be happy – being sad doesn’t help your health.

CERT Volunteers for Carmageddon

Among other events that CERT is looking for help with is Carmageddon. I received requests for a few events this weekend for the San Fernando Valley as well however I have a full plate with First Responder classes.

Any locals in CERT – please help LAFD and Capt. Gerlich out if you can.

Looks like the st0ck market is going to have some adjustin’ to do today. Hope everybody is phine and dandy (yes I am purposefully mis-spelling words to prove a point that the human eye can see and read a lot of things).

Kinder and Not So Gentler

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Anger is the new sexy. If you take a look at the reality shows that are on the air there isn’t a lot to be said too often for kindness or gentleness. There is a lot of anger and snarkiness. Apparently that is what has been profitable for the cable networks and they are putting on more of the same.

Between the screaming pawn people, screaming gun store people and yelling tow truck people it is a wonder that the screaming traffic ticket people and others aren’t screaming.

I know that I am screaming (well at least on the inside) because people are not civil to each other – even trying to pretend to be. This isn’t a good or profitable idea in business because there are a lot of us – like everybody- who whether they voice it or not, want to be treated well.

The trick is to remember to pause for a few seconds and remember to treat other people the way that you want to be treated.

Have a good one, gang.

Precious Metals Oh Precious

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, some people are nuts over precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. For the interim it is my opinion that the prices are as high as they will get for a few months but I think, like a lot of pundits that after the elections things will take off.

There is inflation – just look at the dinky sizes of vending machine candy bars and their prices if you don’t believe me. Not convinced? Check out the cost of food and gasoline.

For the short haul the precious metals have been profitable for a lot of people and I think you will see investors and speculators taking cash off the table for the short term – at least till the election is over.

My thoughts are that unless you want to be like Gollum and try to reach for a ring as it goes falling into Mt. Doom (if I remember the volcano correctly) you may want to sit on your hands in the shire.

My opinion is based on my research and I am not an investor consultant.

Steve Wozniak and Australia

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

I read that Steve Wozniak is going to become an Australian citizen because they are planning on rolling out national broadband. Okay, well he says that he will also be a US citizen so that means that he will be paying some taxes here in the United States. Is this going to be profitable for him? For people who are truly doing things for the personal satisfaction, it very well may be. He certainly shouldn’t be hurting for money nor paying taxes in two countries if that is the case.

My own concern would be that sometimes national broadband plans or run communications might be just as lumpy as if things weren’t nationally mandated. It depends on how supportive the govt really is and if everybody on board is excited or not. Australia is smaller than the United States so it should be easier to do national broadband. My questions would be what would the national cost be to the Australian people and is it profitable for the govt to slowly raises rates once it is installed. Once you get everybody hooked you know, where will they go?

Hope all is well.
