Passed the First Responder Training

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Greetings to all my fans and the curious. I haven’t been posting lately because I have been busy. I recently completed the Wilderness High Adventure First Aid and First Responder training course. It qualifies here in Southern California as Level 3 for CERT (the Community Emergency Response Team) training. I passed the written and the practical (well, thanks to the instructors for doing a killer job of presenting the information). The main instructor, Dr. Marlene Lugg, was very good and I suggest anybody in Southern California who is interested in learning emergency first aid check out her class. Thanks as well to Cap, Steve, Robert, Glenn, Dave and whoever else I am missing from their supporting cast of co-instructors. The class ran for two months and was around 55 plus hours and some days longer than that.

There was a lot of ground covered and the scenarios we covered were very interesting. Hoping all of you are having a great holiday and I will try to get back to posting more often.

If you are free on early Wed nights I can be heard checking in and sometimes taking check-ins with Steve-another of many people named Steve, KILOV, on the PAPA system from So Cal. That is Wed nights at 7 pm Pacific time. You can look for it as well at the radioreference.com website.

Stay healthy and happy.

Thanks NASA for listening to me

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

It turns out either I am psychic or I was in tune with the press release that came out today. NASA is going to be building a new liquid rocket and they are going back to the old reliable rocket launches and the goal is to culminate with 1 a year. Down the line there will be in the 2030s a launch for a Mars orbit and hopefully a person landing on Mars. Thanks for hearing me out guys and gals. The future is out there and in space. Now if we can get people working down here and the environment a little cleaned up we will be all set.

How do I save America – We Go To Mars

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

How do I suggest we save America and get people working? That is easy. We go to Mars. We start ramping up a domestic only, hire American only system that will employ American citizens for work on a space program to get to Mars and build a space station. Heck, why stop there and why not build a research facility? The cold reality is that companies (the biggy ones) are multi-national and have offices all over the globe these days to try to avoid paying taxes. The IRS is starting to crack down on them. The companies need an incentive to come back to the US, and a financial one in the form of lower or forgiven taxes in exchange for getting people here working isn’t a bad plan. There could be a split patent sharing program and other incentives to keep companies researching and domestic.

My rationale for this is that we can create whatever money we need and if we go deeper into debt, the trade off is that there will be businesses in America employing people and getting their profits and people working again. This worked in the 1960s in the space race and in the 1980s it helped end the Cold War. Spending by government isn’t bad if it is done in a rational way and the money actually gets in the hands of the government’s citizens, right? Debt is also something that can be erased or added to with a stroke of computer key or brush of a finger on a touch screen depending on how it is done. The point is – are people working?

Companies along with their tax breaks could get limited use of any patents that they would create but the US govt would share in revenues as part of the incentive cash for building the spacecraft, the stations or whatever else we need to get people to Mars.

We can start a very early stage terraforming mandate where we get large companies to start researching what it would take to convert Mars into a viable planet that we could inhabit. Sure, my suggestions may be a little kooky but the time has come for some out there suggestions and my proposals aren’t that far out there. In hindsight was it a lot of money spent to get a person on the moon just so they could hit golf balls? Maybe if you didn’t factor in all the great accomplishments technologically that came out of the program.

Have a great day everybody and may you be happy, healthy, getting some cash and keeping your sanity.

Upcoming Changes to Sch C for 2011 – 2012

Friday, August 19th, 2011

I just came back from Las Vegas from the IRS Tax Forum that they had there and like a lot of seminars, you find that you can get some good information from some sessions and you take that with you going forward or for your tax practice. One thing coming down the pike from the IRS is that there will be changes coming for people who receive EFT or electronic payments for goods and services that they sell. This will affect business people and especially people who do a lot of ebayish transactions like with paypal and the like. The IRS has not had a way to match up the electronic debits going on and they are starting the process to keep track of it. Can people still be profitable if they are including their monies that they didn’t before? Please! The folks who didn’t report this as income were not in compliance with tax code which states that you are taxed on all worldwide income. Sales from websites fit the bill and if I can put aside money from my book sales and any transactions retailers can to. The impression is that most legitimate retailers do track all of their transactions and it is the borderline pssst come here buddy wanna buy something neat with cash retailers (not my clients) who the IRS wants to talk with.

Look for either changes to the Schedule C and/or changes to the Form 1040 later on for more information or through the IRS website.

Las Vegas was a nice 101 to 106 degrees while I was there and I had a good time at the convention. I am not defending or criticizing the IRS but I have to compliment them because the sheer volume of work that they have to get done for a thankless job is pretty impressive so thanks for being there guys (and ladies).

There were a decent number of software vendors and sales reps at the show and some of their products were interesting. If I have the time I will post more later on.

Stay cool and comfortable gang!

KJ6QLH

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

I recently passed the Technician class (if I remembered the name correctly) test and received my ham radio license from the FCC. My call sign is KJ6QLH. I figured for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) or emergency Red Cross help it would be nice to be able to reach people if the cell sites go down. I studied I think for the test for 3 days and at this point I don’t have a ham radio. I am researching what to get and will check with some friends and possibly some more Ham groups. The price for ham radios isn’t relatively expensive when compared to other electronic devices and toys. What does a video game system run with accessories- about $400, right? For that price you can get a Ham radio – a decent handheld and upgrade your antennae.

What has been odd is that places like Radio Shack (which use to heavily support ham radio sales) is not the place to go anymore – weird since they are trying to get the trendy name “The Shack” going. They cell GPS thingies, cell phone stuff and their electronic stuff but not really a lot of ham products (at least here on the West Coast). A few stores are profitable with ham sales since they are the few surviving stores that help sell to government and emergency services support people (and heck, hobbyists too). So far the ham operators I have met and talked with seem like good people. Good to know in case of an emergency and cell phones are dead.

Hope everybody is doing well and they are safe and sane.

I am back teaching tax classes – just a reminder if you have any tax questions for me as well.

Take care.

Want to know something odd

Friday, July 29th, 2011

The numbers 1,3,5,7,9,11 and 13. Seriously, the only thing odder than that is that our President and Congress have really waited way too long before doing something about our country’s finances.

We need to get more jobs going and the only odd thing about that is that neither Congress nor our President have introduced anything in the proposed changes that will create jobs at a local level for people who are in need of money and work.

Taxes aren’t going to be paid by Americans who are out of work. It just won’t work – they won’t have any money. If something isn’t done to encourage businesses to start spending more on local communities and making it worth while to create work, I fear for what is going to happen in the future.

We need more incentives to create jobs, local manufacturing, and industry opportunity zones throughout the country and not just localized in some parts of cities that are in urban chaos. The incentives have to be for American citizens who are out of work to get hired and it has to be that business will get rewarded for starting up shop and getting and keeping employees. I am just sayin. Things won’t change overnight but there is no need to wait for the doomsayers to hit 2012, we are having a pretty bad time as a nation overall right now.

Write the President and Congress and tell them to get the debt ceiling in place, start creating and encouraging local, American jobs. That is what we need to get the nation back on its feet.

We need to cut overseas spending and get more incentives locally here in the United States to get work going and people off their butts.

Thanks for listening and have a good weekend.

Captain America movie is good but is Metal Slug

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

We went to see the Captain America movie last night and it was entertaining (one of the best films coming from Marvel in my opinion) but it was like watching the video game Metal Slug.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Metal Slug, the old SNK vid game that has been ported over to a bunch of systems over the years. It was just weird realizing it while I was watching the Cap movie. The action is good but I wish the movie hadn’t ripped off the vid game so directly at times. Just sayin’.

Go see it, enjoy it and make your own decision. I bet the flick is gonna be very profitable regardless of what I say.

Arianna’s Wish Granted

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

I want to take some time and give a special thanks to the Make A Wish people for granting Arianna’s wish and getting her a special needs tandem bicycle. The presentation was held at Chuck E. Cheese and Arianna was surprised. Special thanks for Alycia (spelling I hope is right-if it was Alicya I hope this makes up for it) and Jose from Make A Wish and Jason from Freedom Concepts.

Hope everybody is having a great holiday.

June 21 2011 Veggies coming in

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

My tomatoes and red peppers are starting to come in. It may not be profitable at this point to grow produce commerically for the volume that I am doing but it should be enough to keep the family in some food now and then. My strawberries are coming in and I am winning the fight against the bugs in my garden.

The love the strawberries, mint and lettuce. So far my heirloom tomatoes are doing well. My squash is slow moving and the cantalope is moving along slowly. I am looking forward to having the cantalope. Arianna has eaten the strawberries (I have had some and they are sweet). I suggest that everybody if they have the space (even if they don’t) grow some fruit and veggies.

Arianna received a citizenship award and I am happy for her. She was delighted when she was going to the stage and she heard yells and applause for her. She started laughing. It was hot but it was worth it.

Ah, back to having a cup of tea with lemon in it from my own tree. the lemons have been coming in not stop and there look to be more coming in. Nice.

Happy Solstice, gang and I hope you are healthy, happy, getting solvent and getting wisdom.

June 02 New Moon Farming

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Ah, the new moon on June 02 2011. I have been waiting for weeks for it to hit so I can complete my planting for my lasagna gardening and farming. I have spent the last few weeks being profitable by planting a lasagna field (roughly ten feet by ten feet) in a sunny corner of my backyard.

The layering that I used was a cardboard box, some horse manure, some cuttings and dead leaves from my front lawn and the street for composty filling, some potting soil, another layer of manure and then some more soil. I am layering the top of the mulchy mess with both alfalfa straw (to build up the nitrates over the next six or so months) and straw hay (to keep the moisture in the soil as I water it).

I have acquired tomato plants, watermelon seeds, cantalope seeds, yams, and some other fine tenants who will provide nourishment and something to look at other than lawn in the back.

My planting will start tonight and I already am starting to get a small tomato on one of my plants. I am excited (what can I say, I excite easily with some things).

I will try and get some pictures up once I get everything into the ground and watered. The temperature has been hot but not hot enough to dry the land completely out and for that I have been grateful. My other garden is doing well. The spearmint I planted is doing well, the chocolate mint -not so much. My spinach and cauliflower are under attack from bugs and I think my strawberries are under both bug invasion at a possible gopher. For my gopher problems I need to put some meshy plastic or something like that under the earth and I forgot to do that over my new plantings. Ah well.

The strawberries, when I get to them before the critters, are pretty sweet and tasty.

The roses in the front of our yard are doing well as well as our trees wth the exception of the poor plum tree. The plum tree has been around for decades from what I understand (I met one of the guys in the neighborhood who remember planting it decades ago) and the few plums that are coming out are under assault my squirrels. The dogs wait patiently at the bottom of the tree having learnt the art of dog stalking. They sit like statues and wait for the squirrels to come down the tree or try to leap to the fence from a branch. A couple older ones have made it. A few babies ended up in Angels’ not-so-tender mercies and teeth.

The dogs have been pretty good about staying out of the garden after tons of yelling and chasing them away. They finally are getting the message. Prior to this Shiloh more than Angel would dig at the roots of the plants and veggies to try and get to them. Smart dogs.

I am in the midst of cleaning out the rest of my backyard from weeds and am trying to get a decent spot to put chickens. The self-sufficency seems to grow upon itself and compound. Er, I think that is a good thing or at least until I run out of energy completely.

If you also have any tax questions or issues please drop me a line or holler at me. Just cuz we are out of offical tax season doesn’t mean that you aren’t getting letters from the Fed or State or don’t have questions, right?

Stay happy and healthy gang!
