How To Stay Sane While Unemployed

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I get e-mails all the time about people who are starting to go bonkers since they have lost their jobs.  One of the hardest things about dealing with lay offs – and it happens to all of us, trust me- is how to deal with the down time.  And by how to deal with the down time I mean how to stay sane.

If the bills are piling up, start organizing them into what is a higher priority than the other one.  That will make it easier to also start cutting back on spending for things that you don’t need or won’t use.

If you are running low on medicine that you need, make sure that you get it.  Your health has to stay intact so you can make it through the Depression we are in and out to better times.

Expect the bad times to last for about five years.  If you are out of work now, start looking at what job do you want to do to make a living.  Take advantage of the down time to start retraining yourself for something that is marketable.  The so-called green industries are thriving and despite Caterpillar stock dropping like a rock (boo hiss) there is a lot of infrastructure work that is needed in this country and we need more engineers.

Keep your brain sharp by doing crosswords, puzzles, brain teasers and memory games like Concentration.  Ever play the game of Concentration?  It is easy.  Get a deck of cards, shuffle it and place them on the table in a tableau ( a table) layout so the cards look like a board.  With at least one friend, take turns turning over two cards trying to make matching cards.  If you get a Jack with oe card and a Two with the other number, that isn’t a match.  Two sixes are a match.  You get to keep the cards that you matched.  Winner of the game is the person who can get the most sets.  It is a great game for matching things and keeping yourself sane by keeping your memory skills sharp.

Practice your writing skills on a computer.

Keep your mind sharp by playing chess with the computer on increasing levels of difficulty.

Exercise, exercise and exercise.  Keep your body moving and healthy to keep your brain young and agile.  You can do it.

Watch your expenses and try to watch your diet.  By avoiding too many snacks you can save money and keep yourself alive longer by watching your weight.

There may be relief coming now with the stimulus bill being signed.  Medical benefits may be covered a little longer and better with the government paying for part of the missing COBRA benefits.  That will lower the payments for those of us who are unemployed to something little easier to pay.

For those of us who are under-employed there will be a little extra money in each paycheck.  Our Federal taxes will have less money taken out.

And no shock here, the State of California STILL hasn’t balanced the budget.  Sheesh.  We have people waiting for their refunds here!  Come on gang, get with it.  Californians, get ready to vote them all out of office if they don’t get with the program.  People are losing their homes and are hungry here!

Fear and Loathing On Wall Street

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

The markets tanked on Tueday because Wall Street didn’t like what they heard about the bailout package.  Gold came back somewhat, I lost (on paper at this point) a little bit on CAT stock but I am patient and believe that it will go back up though maybe not for a day or so.  That particular company is in need of some good news but people still need bulldozers and heavy equipment, if nothing else to dig themselves and their companies out of the holes that we have dug for ourselves.

In all seriousness my number one concern is the continuing lay offs that are going on.  Somebody is going to have to flip some sort of big switch and it won’t happen overnight to get the “Now Hiring” signs going.  For every job there will be hundreds if not thousands or hundreds of thousands of applicants.  With the ease of the Internet, hiring managers will be swamped and overwhelmed.  The hiring process will drop down to a crawl and in the meantime, people will have to manage their finances carefully.

I believe that we, as people need to shore up our financial defenses and besides save money, start re-educating ourselves with skills like math, engineering, agriculture and things that will in the long run benefit ourselves and our children.  We need to get our kids out of the Homer Simpson mentality of “D’oh” and into the mentality of being able to make dough.  Take the time to go over homework with your kids (if you have kids) and remind them that in the future and in their lifetime it will be very competitive for jobs.  I believe that we all need to get our Congressional leaders off their butts and keep the money coming for education.

Mr. President, let’s get talking about the space race to Mars again shall we?  The thought of having American companies hiring Americans to work on a manned American mission to Mars is patriotic and profitable.  We can get people employed by the hundreds of thousands and have a goal that will unite as a people instead of divide us into a nation of villages.

If a lot of these multinational corporations would cut back on their high payments to themselves and take the time to reinvest more into the people who helped get their plants started, created ideas for them and ultimately purchased their products maybe they would fare a little better these days.  To be fair, there are companies that do help their employees and even in layoff times they are doing what they can to help them out.

The other side of the coins is that  people got complacent and lazy or did at any rate, and they took their jobs for granted.    I am working on trying to get an answer and all roads lead to infrastructure, getting the Mars Mission Race going and doing something to create more jobs – and quickly.  Enough of my ramblings for today.  I need to get up to watch how my CAT stock will fare.

I wish you the best, Mr. President, and Congress.  Have clear thinking and remember that there are people out there who are out of work, hungry and want to get back to working.

What else should I comment on before I go…..

No word on the California State Refund situation at this point either.  More as it develops for my fellow and sister Californians.

Dealing With Unemployment, Lay Offs and Depression

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

With 75000 jobs being laid off on Monday, more layoffs on the way, and no end in sight for lay offs in general, here is a reminder to check my blog entry, No Job.  Things are pretty grim for a lot of people and as a supplement to the post and information in my book, Practical Money Making (which deals with surviving a depression/Depression and making money), here are some more tips:

hardtimes

1.  Unemployment, though extended, may be in short supply if the government agencies run out of money, even for the short term.  Sure, the government eventually will do something to help but if you are hungry now and have a family now get your application going.  If you received any kind of severance package, you probably will have to blow through that before your unemployment kicks in.  That is the way that it works, at least in California.  I suspect other states have similar programs.

2.  Take stock of everything that you have.  If you are fortunate enough to have some savings, start looking at budgeting to make money last.  If you are living hand-to-mouth and were getting by paycheck-to-paycheck you need to start thinking of other jobs you can do and maybe at a lower salary.  It isn’t pretty.  I have gone through something similar and it is just a sign of the times.  It is the destruction of supply that I’ve talked about (others as well) and companies, unsure of the future, are trying to be lean and mean.  You need to adapt a similar position if you are to survive for the next few days, months, weeks and years.  I am making it.  You can and you will, too.

 3.   You will be in a depression in a Depression.  Don’t do anything irrational.  You will make it through this.  There have been accounts of people killing themselves etc and just remember it is only money.  There have been stories where supervisors who were clueless encouraged employees to take their own lives as they were about to be laid off and that is totally irresponsible.  I’ve had some punks try to post something on my blog at times and I have blistered some of them a new place to evacuate themselves with and others I have ignored.  Ignore all the bad energy.

Seriously, ignore people’s bad energy.  You need to look after yourself and your family.  Start looking at trying to raise vegetables, food, etc at home.  Living in the Rust Belt and is it too cold?  Hydroponic gardening inside an option?  Worse case, think about moving, even temporarily to warmer climates.

Think about going multi-family in dwellings.  If you have the space for the short term and can handle the psychological ill-effects of crowding, move in with friends and relatives.  Try not to make it for a long time but if you need to do it, do what you have to do.

Talk to counselors, therapists, free socal help groups, – anything that can help you psychologically make it through this lousy time.  Start thinking about what you will do differently to protect yourself when you get out of the situation that you are in.  You will get out of it.  It may not happen over night but you will get out of it and thing will get better.

May you be at peace, be happy, get wealthier, and have wisdom.
