What is ROI revisited

Question from a reader:”Give me some clear examples of ROI will you?”

Sure thing.  ROI, also known as “Return on Investment” is the acronym that businesses use to show that they are getting back money for what they are investing in.  I think I may have talked about this in some of my books and a column or two but it is worth revisiting.

When it comes to money, you want to ask yourself, “What am I getting back in return for putting up this money and investing in your company, product, etc?”

You may not articulate this question to yourself but you always are asking yourself at some level  “What is in it for me?”.  ROI calculations spell it out for you very clearly.

If you put $1000 into a certificate of deposit for example that returns the principal and 10% in one year (a princely sum with interest rates in the cellar these days) your ROI is $100.

Now more than ever, a business looks at everything, especially labor as to what they can get for their ROI.  That means that when you pitch yourself to a company, you need to take into account what is it that you can do for them and do it quickly.  That means that most resume formats are pretty much trash and employers who are swamped want you to get to the bottom line and answer “What can you do for me?” just as you ask “What is in it for me?”

As we muddle and claw out of this Depression, we need to be  aware of ROI in everything we do financially.  I know some people look to see what they are getting out of relationships in the same vein but sometimes you can’t put a price on love, except in a divorce settlement.

Have a great weekend and I will post again later on tonight.

Part of all the proceeds from the sales of that book go to Rett Syndrome research. One girl is born with Rett Syndrome worldwide every fifteen minutes. My daughter Arianna has Rett Syndrome and we are working to do all we can to make her life easier and find a cure in her lifetime. Boys born with the Rett gene generally die at birth.
